Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about living in Spain.

Clear answers to questions that often arise before and after a move to Spain.

01What is an NIE number and is it the same as residencia?

No. An NIE is your personal identification number for dealings with Spanish authorities, for example when buying a property, handling a tax matter or opening a bank account. The number itself does not grant the right to reside and does not prove you live in Spain. Residencia is the registration of your stay as an EU citizen.

02When do I need to register as an EU citizen in Spain?

If you plan to live in Spain for more than three months, you must register as an EU citizen. Which supporting documents are needed depends on factors such as employment, self-employment, income and healthcare coverage. A&M helps map out your situation first, then determines the correct application route.

03What is the difference between padrón and residencia?

The padrón is your registration in the residents' register of the Spanish municipality where you live. Residencia is the formal EU registration with the competent immigration authority. These are two different registrations; the order and required documents may vary per situation and municipality.

04Can I keep my Dutch health insurance if I live in Spain?

That depends on your personal situation. Some people with a Dutch pension or benefit may be entitled to an S1 form through the CAK. Those who work or run a business in Spain may come into contact with the Spanish system. Therefore, have your applicable route determined before your move.

05When do I become a tax resident of Spain?

Spending more than 183 days per calendar year in Spain is an important criterion, but not the only one. The centre of your economic interests and, in certain cases, your family situation may also be relevant. Tax residency is also something different from administrative residencia, so have your situation assessed individually.

06Does my Dutch driving licence remain valid in Spain?

A valid Dutch driving licence, as an EU licence, is in principle also valid in Spain. For licences with a very long or unlimited validity and in case of renewal, loss or damage, additional Spanish rules apply. A&M can help determine which procedure applies to your licence.

07Can A&M also help with buying or selling a property?

Yes. Through RE/MAX Beach Homes, A&M assists with searching, viewing, negotiating and coordination towards the notary. Where legal, tax or administrative review is needed, the appropriate specialists from the network are involved.

08Where does A&M operate and in which languages can I get in touch?

A&M operates in Costa Blanca South, from Santa Pola and Guardamar to Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa and Pilar de la Horadada, as well as around the Mar Menor and in Murcia and Cartagena. You can contact us in Dutch, English, Spanish, German and Russian.

Procedures and requirements may change and depend on your personal situation. A&M always verifies which route applies at the time of your request.
